Trinity Musical Theatre Company | Spotlight on Am Dram

Today I'm introducing a new series to my blog called 'Spotlight on Am Dram'. I had an excellent response to my post Why I Love Amateur Theatre a few months ago where I mentioned some local amateur dramatic companies so I decided to devote at least one post a month to the groups that are getting people involved in theatre. I'm going to try and visit one theatre company a month to get an idea of the rehearsal process, get a feel for the company and a taste of any upcoming shows they may have which I will then report back on here. For August I'm going back to my roots and introducing you to Trinity Musical Theatre Company, based in my hometown of Wolverhampton!

Trinity actually began back in 1936 as an operatic society performing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, but having run through their entire repertoire multiple times the company decided to have a revamp in 2015 and became Trinity Musical Theatre Company. I was a member of the company for 7 years before moving to Cardiff for university and so it's great to see them taking on the exciting and challenging musical that is The Witches of Eastwick in November. Rehearsals for the show began in March bringing together members of the old company with some new singers, dancers, a choreographer and musical director.

The Witches of Eastwick is a lively and upbeat show about a small American town that gets invaded by Mr Darryl Van Horne, aka the devil himself. It's risque - something that Trinity has never done before but I can tell that everyone is embracing it and having a lot of fun doing it. Although the dance numbers look like hard work, choreographer Emilie Walt breaks each routine down into manageable chunks that everyone can understand, whether experienced performers or first-timers. Deborah Jones is a relatively new member of the company who has always wanted to perform but had felt that she lacked the confidence. She told me that she chose Trinity because everyone was really friendly and that "it's great to be part of something" which I think is true testament to why amateur companies are so important.

I cannot wait to see the end product of these rehearsals. It's set to be an explosive finale to the official first year as Trinity Musical Theatre Company and I have no doubt that it's going to be an entertaining show. The Witches of Eastwick will run from the 1st to the 5th November at the Dormston Mill Theatre and I hope to see some of you there. For more details check out Trinity's website and be sure to give their Facebook page a like to keep up with their progress.

If you are a member of, or know of a company that would like to be featured in next month's 'Spotlight on Am Dram', get in touch either by email at or by using the links in my sidebar. Hope to hear from you soon!
